Two Decades That Changed The United States. Restored History in Color

In April 1914, Henry Ford established an internal motion picture department at his Highland Park plant, dispatching camera crews across the United States to capture an unprecedented visual record of a changing country. This meticulously restored and colorized documentary chronicles the profound transformation of the American landscape between 1914 and 1927, charting the rapid evolution from horse-drawn rural isolation to a fully mechanized society dominating the land, sea, and air. The journey begins in an era of deep physical separation. Dirt roads turn to impassable mud each spring, confining farming families to their homesteads, while cities like New York and Washington rely on horse traffic, elevated trains, and steam locomotives. Yet, inside the Highland Park plant, an engineering revolution was underway. The moving assembly line slashed the production time of the Model T, placing personal mobility within reach of ordinary citizens and laying the foundation for modern mass manufacturing. When the United States entered the First World War in 1917, this domestic industrial apparatus turned toward total military mobilization. Archival footage captures the solemn reunion of Union and Confederate veterans at Vicksburg alongside the departure of fresh recruits from Camp Custer. American factories adapted to manufacture armaments at astonishing speed. The River Rouge complex began riveting the steel hulls of Eagle-class patrol boats for anti-submarine service, while Highland Park experimented with a lightweight two-man tank powered by twin Model T engines. In the air, the newly designed Liberty V-12 engine powered military aircraft, Curtiss H-type flying boats entered naval production, and the twin-engine Martin Bomber demonstrated the expanding reach of aerial warfare under the guidance of aces like Eddie Rickenbacker. Following the Armistice, this production capacity pivoted back to peace. Concrete highway construction replaced rutted carriage tracks, the Columbia River Highway opened the Pacific Northwest, and millions took to the road for leisure, camping, and cross-country touring. Farm labor was revolutionized through the widespread adoption of the Fordson tractor, rural electrification, and running water, freeing generations from unrelenting manual toil. The chronicle culminates in 1927 at Dearborn’s Ford Airport, where Charles Lindbergh arrived in the Spirit of St. Louis, inaugurating the commercial aviation era and shrinking the continent forever.
