Sometimes “be humble” is not guidance. Sometimes it is how we learn to disappear. We soften our words. We soften how we show up. We wait to be invited. We add disclaimers. We stay quiet until we are certain. And then we call it humility. This is Day 12 of 15 Days of Evidence, a daily reflection practice I created for myself because I was tired of looking over at the woman I thought I needed to become and missing the woman I am today. I still have places I want to go. I still have things I want to grow into. But I do not want the future version of me to make the woman I am now disappear. Today, I’m sitting with the difference between humility and hiding. Many of us have learned that being seen, naming what we’ve done, or saying what we want makes us “too much”. For women who are navigating different worlds, expectations, cultures, identities, and ideas about what it means to be “a good woman”, that pressure can become especially complicated. But humility allows us to remain open, teachable, and connected to other people. Hiding asks us to disappear from our own lives. This is not about announcing everything. It is not about making everything part of a brand. It is not about taking up space at someone else’s expense. It is about asking: Where have I mistaken self-erasure for humility? What is one small way I can allow myself to be seen fully and truthfully? You might also ask: What has hiding cost me? On your Evidence Board, you could note: Where I have mistaken self-erasure for humility. One small way I am ready to be seen. What hiding has cost me. What I am ready to let be true. If you want access to the Evidence Board I’m using, comment EVIDENCE BOARD and I’ll share it with you. If you want to create your own, comment HEADINGS and I’ll send you the headings. This is not about doing it perfectly. It is about taking less than 10 minutes to answer one honest question for ourselves, about ourselves, and allowing the evidence to stand toe-to-toe with doubt. That is enough for today. This is Day 12 of 15 Days of Evidence, a simple daily reflection practice to help us return to the evidence of who we already are, especially when self-doubt gets loud. If you’ve just found the series, Days 1–11 are already available on my YouTube channel. You can begin at Day 1 or start here and move through the reflections at your own pace. Where have you mistaken self-erasure for humility?
