Dived on the 26th April 2026 Thierry was a French fishing trawler sailing from La Rochelle, with a crew of 10, and was fishing in extremely heavy fog when she collided with Regine in July 1971. The collision was catastrophic and contemporary accounts described Thierry as being virtually cut in two. Two men died: Maxime Guiochet, the skipper Samuel Fradet, a crewman The other eight crewmen survived, being rescued from the water by Regine — the very vessel that had struck them. The account is particularly harrowing because Guiochet was trapped in the wheelhouse. The surviving crew could hear him calling for help, but couldn’t get him out before the vessel disappeared. We found that the vessel wasn’t actually cleanly cut in half, despite what the survivors understandably believed at the time. We found a massive impact deformation in the side of the bridge, and a huge opening in the hull consistent with the bow of the much larger Regine driving into her. The damage would have allowed an enormous amount of water into the trawler very rapidly, explaining why Thierry sank so quickly. #Gasperados #technicaldive #deepwreck
