Colin Firth Almost Turned Down Mr. Darcy: Pride and Prejudice Cast Then and Now

He was one of the most reluctant leading men in British TV history — and almost said no to the role that made him a legend. Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy, dripping from a lake he was never supposed to swim in, turned a quiet BBC costume drama into a cultural phenomenon. But what happened to the rest of the cast after the cameras stopped rolling? In this episode, we revisit the BBC's iconic 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice — the series that launched Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle into stardom, turned Alison Steadman and Benjamin Whitrow into the definitive Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, and quietly hid a real-life family connection to Jane Austen herself in the cast. Thirty-one years later, we trace where all eleven stars ended up — from Oscar wins and one-man stage shows to a surprising switch from acting to teaching. 👉 If you grew up watching this adaptation, let us know in the comments which cast member's story surprised you the most! 🔔 Subscribe to Golden Era Stars for more "Then and Now" retrospectives on the classic films and TV shows you grew up with. ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video is for entertainment and informational purposes only.
