Originally built as the East German minesweeper Pasewalk during the Cold War, the vessel later served as the Maltese patrol boat P31 before being retired from service. After decades at sea, she was deliberately scuttled off Comino in 2009 to create an artificial reef and dive attraction. Today, this historic Cold War relic rests beneath the crystal-clear waters near the Blue Lagoon, offering divers a unique glimpse into the past. This dive on the P31 was full of personal milestones: it was my 30th scuba dive, my first wreck dive since completing my AOWD course, and the first time I took responsibility for another diver. We had agreed that I would escort our new diver, Julian, back to the boat once he was running low on air. Melanie, Julian and I were guided by Frank from Atlantis Gozo, who did an excellent job making this both a beautiful and safe dive. Special thanks to Optimum Private Charters for providing the boat transfer and the hearty lunch during our trip. Last but not least, I'd like to thank Melanie and Julian. You were both great dive buddies and made this experience even more memorable!
