Inside a Southern Utah Animal Rescue | Because Animals Matter

What really happens behind the doors of a local animal rescue? I spent some time with Because Animals Matter (BAM) in Hurricane, Utah to find out. I met Kathy, Victoria, Robin, Miriam and Bo, a roughly one year old pup, and we sat down to talk about what BAM does for animals throughout Southern Utah. We talked about adoption, fostering, volunteering, dog sleepovers and what it can take to help an animal become comfortable living inside a home. For some dogs, that can mean learning how they respond to kids, cats, other dogs and normal everyday life before finding the right permanent home. Then we toured the BAM facility and got to see some of the spaces where the animals stay, along with improvements that volunteers and members of the community have helped build. After that, Kathy and I headed around the corner to BAM Thrift on Main Street in Hurricane. The little thrift store is packed with donated items including jewelry, clothing, kitchen items, electronics, toys, puzzles, records, CDs, blankets, home decor and plenty of unexpected finds. Profits from BAM Thrift help support BAM’s programs and the animals and people they serve. BAM is celebrating its 20th year in 2026.
