Before Simon became a bold apostle, Jesus saw something in him that Simon could not yet see in himself. In this powerful 2nd part of our teaching, Why did Jesus give Simon the name Cephas?, we discover that when Jesus gives a new name, He also reveals a new identity, a new calling, and a new destiny. The name Cephas, which means Peter, was not just a title. It was a prophetic declaration over Simon’s life. Jesus did not only see Simon’s weaknesses, fear, mistakes, and impulsive character; He saw what grace would produce in him. He saw a witness, a servant, a leader, and an instrument for the building of His Church. You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas, which is translated, A Stone. John 1:42 This message reminds us that Jesus Christ knows our past, but He is not limited by our past. He calls us into transformation, restoration, purpose, and a new life for His glory. If Jesus could transform Simon into Peter, He can also transform your life, strengthen your faith, and use you for His kingdom.
