This is the whole story: the opening night in nineteen fifty-four when two thousand cars turned up for six hundred spaces, the pyjamas and the playground under the screen, the speaker on the glass, the boot trick, interval at the snack bar — and then the killers, one by one: daylight saving, colour TV, the video shop, and the land the paddock sat on.
