What your kids are really learning from you

Your kids are learning how to make decisions long before you ever sit down to teach them. They’re watching how you handle stress, uncertainty, money, time, relationships, and the moments when life feels overwhelming. They’re not just noticing what you decide—they’re learning from how you decide. After teaching a group of high school students and asking what decisions they saw their parents struggling with, I was struck by how clearly they could describe not only the challenges their parents faced, but how their parents were handling them. Our children aren’t learning how to avoid uncertainty. They’re learning how to face it. Whether we realize it or not, we’re helping them build a decision-making playbook they may carry into adulthood. The good news? We can strengthen our own playbook while helping them build theirs. Great questions lead to great decisions. And every difficult decision can become an opportunity to model how to navigate life with greater clarity and confidence.
