Welcome to episode 2 of Subbu Speaks on Chandragiri Subbu. In this vinayaka chavithi special video, we will discuss about Ganesh Pandals History & Facts. The first Ganesh pandal in Mumbai was established in 1893 at Keshavji Naik Chawl in south Mumbai. The festival was started by Rao Bahadur Limaye and Godse Shastri, who were close associates of the chawl, after Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak called for public celebrations. The festival is known as the Sarvajanik Ganeshutsav. A 1 foot (0.30 m) high idol of the Hindu deity Ganesha was first established in 1954 at Khairatabad locality in Hyderabad to commemorate the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. It was started by Singari Shankaraiah, Indian independence movement activist and former corporator, who was inspired by Bal Gangadhar Tilak's call in 1893 to celebrate the festival as a mark of unity. The Madras High Court ruled in 2004 that immersion of Ganesh idols is unlawful because it incorporates chemicals that pollute the sea water. In Goa the sale of plaster-of-Paris Ganesha idols has been banned by the state government and celebrants are encouraged to buy traditional, artisan-made clay idols. Recent initiatives to produce traditional clay Ganesh idols in Hyderabad have been sponsored by the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board. Due to environmental concerns, a number of families now avoid bodies of water and let the clay Murtis disintegrate in a barrel of water at home. After a few days, the clay is spread in the garden. In some cities a public, eco-friendly process is used for the immersion.This video addresses all these aspects.
