The Master as Physician of the Heart
In the Chishti Nizami path, devotional practices are not one-size-fits-all. They depend on the seeker, because the authorized shaykh (pir-o-murshid) is a physician of the heart. Following the way of Khawaja Gharib Nawaz Moinuddin Chishti, the shaykh looks past outward appearances to the inner ailments of pride, heedlessness and attachment to the world that keep the seeker from true knowledge and sincere service to Allah. He then prescribes a remedy (zikr, muraqaba, fasting, service or remembrance) suited to that particular heart.
For this reason the Sufi masters teach that the seeker cannot diagnose himself. The nafs (ego) is a poor judge of its own sickness, and practices taken up alone, without permission or guidance, can do more harm than good. The seeker submits to the guidance of the shaykh, whose own chain (silsila) of authorization leads back through Khawaja Nizamuddin Auliya and Khawaja Gharib Nawaz to the Prophet ﷺ. Gharib Nawaz described the character this training aims to produce: generosity like a river, affection like the sun, and hospitality like the earth.
Sama and Qawwali: Music of the Heart
Within the Chishti order, sama (devotional listening) has long been a treasured means of stirring love for the Divine. Qawwali grew from this tradition. It is a form of Sufi devotional music popular across South Asia and most often performed at dargahs, including the shrine of Gharib Nawaz at Ajmer Sharif and the dargah of Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi.
Amir Khusrau, the beloved disciple of Khawaja Nizamuddin Auliya, is traditionally said to have shaped the genre in the 13th century by blending Persian, Arabic, Turkish and Indian classical musical styles. The Chishti masters, however, set clear conditions for sama. The gathering must be sincere, the words must praise Allah and His beloved ones, and the listener must be prepared in heart. It is a means of remembrance, never mere entertainment.
