Singing and Drum Dancing, 2014 Land Camp

In 2014, we held a 10-day land camp with the Kitikmeot Inuit Association with 55 participants from 6 communities. The goal of the camp was to transfer knowledge between generations, with a focus on drum dancing, song exchange and performance. In the old days, songs moved between communities as people traveled and formed new relationships, so this gathering was a way to instigate these exchanges once again. We recorded songs and dances, with participants swapping songs and lyrics daily. Regular drum dance performances entertained us during the evenings, and we used the opportunity to talk about the regional variations of dance and drumming that we were witnessing.
