Silver Springs consists of 30 springs with 61 vents and with a flow of 515 million gallons per day makes this spring one of the largest first magnitude spring in the United States. The goal today was to run the Silver River (a COMPLETE NO WAKE ZONE) from where it empties into the Ocklawaha River to its head springs in Silver Springs State Park. The park has lots of history as many movies were filmed here including "Creature from the Black Lagoon", Tarzan, SeaHunt, and episodes of I Spy from the 60's. Glass bottom boats have been in operation for almost 100 years there and take tourists out to see the various springs. Wildlife is what you can see here on any given day, especially in the winter with fish, birds, turtles, wild monkeys, and manatees. The monkeys were placed on an island in the park many years ago and just like you would imagine, they got off the island and have spread out through the jungle/forest along the river. This trip covered 11.9 miles and because I was running at slow speeds I only got 5.1 MPG and burned about 3 gallons. No extra gas is necessary for this trip. It took about 3.5 hours RT due to the slow speeds. The address Ray Wayside Park boat ramp is: 9564 NE 28th Ln, Silver Springs, FL 34488 and there is a $5 daily use fee payable in cash at the unmanned gate. Here: https://goo.gl/maps/84M2Vcz9hDyM6yLt5 You can launch from boats ramps that are farther away on the Ocklawaha River (south) but bear in mind the closer you launch to the Silver River the more time you will have for exploring.
