Did ancient humans have names? With no writing, and no way to preserve a sound?
The answer is older than writing by tens of thousands of years. It does not start with a scribe, a king, or a carved stone. It starts in a cave on the coast of South Africa, with forty-one sea snail shells, each one pierced by hand and worn smooth by a cord. Somebody wore those to say who they were.
This video traces the full history of the human name — from the U-shaped throat bone lifted out of a Neanderthal grave at Kebara, to the middle-ear bones from the Pit of the Bones at Atapuerca, the mammoth-bone huts of Dolní Věstonice, the pierced sea snail shells of Blombos Cave, the crooked-fingered handprints on the walls of Chauvet, the ivory beads sewn onto two children at Sunghir, and one accountant's signature pressed into wet clay at Uruk. By the end, you might never look at the card in your pocket the same way again.

PEOPLE MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO:
▸ Robin Dunbar — British anthropologist (b. 1947). In 1992 he showed that group size across primates tracks neocortex size, ran the equation for humans and got about 150. He has not published anything since without being asked about that number.
▸ Kushim — Uruk-period Sumerian, around 3200 BC. The sign group read as Kushim appears on roughly eighteen proto-cuneiform tablets, always beside barley destined for beer. Nobody knows whether it names a man or the office he held.

CIVILIZATIONS & CULTURES MENTIONED:
▸ The Gravettians of Moravia — Dolní Věstonice, Czech Republic, roughly 26,000 years ago. They framed huts from mammoth bone and fired the first clay figures on Earth. One of them carved a woman's face into ivory and got her lopsided eye right.
▸ The people of Sunghir — the Russian plain near Vladimir, roughly 34,000 years ago. They buried two children head to head under more than ten thousand hand-carved ivory beads, at a cost of some ten thousand hours of work.
