Description THE GOLDEN CHAIN — Hymns of Grace “For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son… and those whom He predestined He also called, and those whom He called He also justified, and those whom He justified He also glorified.” — Romans 8:29–30 The Golden Chain is a hymn about the unbreakable work of God in the salvation of His people. Romans 8:29–30 presents what Christians have historically called the Golden Chain of Salvation: Foreknown → Predestined → Called → Justified → Glorified The same people whom God foreknew are predestined. Those predestined are called. Those called are justified. And those justified are glorified. Not one link is broken. Paul even speaks of our future glorification as something accomplished because the purpose of God is certain. Our salvation begins in God's eternal purpose, is accomplished through Christ, applied by His grace, and reaches its appointed end in glory. That is why the believer can rest. Our security does not ultimately depend upon the strength of our grip upon God, but upon the faithfulness of the God who has taken hold of us. And immediately after revealing this great chain, Paul asks: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” — Romans 8:31 This hymn belongs to Hymns of Grace, a collection centered upon the sovereignty of God, salvation by grace, the sufficiency of Christ, divine providence, and the believer's confidence in the promises of God.
