Until recently, historians believed that the United States gave asylum to only a few Nazi scientists in the aftermath of World War II. But the truth is much more troublesome and has been covered up for decades: the CIA and FBI brought hundreds of perpetrators to America as possible assets against their new Cold War enemies and turned a blind eye to thousands more who sneaked in on their own. Eric Lichtblau, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist for the New York Times, illuminates this shocking chapter of American history.
