Can you hand-colour a print? Absolutely! So who made up the rules anyway? Do you think you need to carve multiple lino plates or master reduction printing to create beautiful, colourful prints? Think again! When I first returned to printmaking after many years away, I thought that was how it had to be done. But then I discovered something rather wonderful… you can simply add colour by hand! In this video, I'm sharing how I hand-colour my prints using simple materials and mixed-media techniques. Whether you love lino printing, relief printmaking or experimenting with different ways to bring your artwork to life, this is your invitation to loosen up, grab some colour and have a play. We'll explore how you can use watercolour, gouache, coloured pencils and acrylic washes to transform a black-and-white print into something completely your own. WHY TRY HAND-COLOURING YOUR PRINTS? • Experiment with colour palettes before committing to additional printing plates. • Create unique, one-of-a-kind prints from the same original block. • Add depth, detail and little pops of colour to your artwork. • Explore mixed-media printmaking without investing in extra equipment. • Slow down, calm your mind and enjoy the meditative joy of making art. • Embrace happy accidents and discover your own creative style. As Margaret Preston once wrote, “Colour is an extravagance of the mind. Colour is the emblem of change.” And I reckon she was onto something! You don't need fancy equipment, complicated techniques or a studio full of supplies. Sometimes all you need is a print, a few colours and permission to experiment. So, if you've ever wondered whether hand-colouring prints is allowed, consider this your official invitation to break that imaginary rule! TELL ME IN THE COMMENTS: Have you ever hand-coloured your prints? What materials do you love using — watercolour, pencils, gouache or something completely different?
