Janmashtami 2026 in Pune falls on Friday, September 4, 2026, with the main midnight puja occurring between 12:10 AM and 12:57 AM on September 5. The festival is locally known as Gokulashtami and is celebrated with significant spiritual and cultural fervor. Spiritual Observances Devotees gather at prominent centers like the ISKCON Temple on Katraj-Kondhwa Road and in the Camp area for akhanda kirtan (continuous devotional singing) and the midnight maha-abhishek (ritual bathing of the deity). The ISKCON Pune Camp also conducts live-streamed darshans and special ceremonies, including midnight aartis, to accommodate devotees. Traditional home rituals involve decorating a cradle for the infant Krishna deity, offering makhan-mishri, and breaking the fast after the midnight puja. Cultural Celebrations The second day of the festival, September 5, features the energetic Dahi Handi tradition, reenacting Krishna’s childhood pastimes. Teams known as Govindas form human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with buttermilk and dry fruits. Major celebrations and joint Dahi Handi events take place at locations such as Lal Mahal Chowk, drawing large crowds for this high-energy, community-focused competition.
