Life in Russia, Living in Yakutsk, Coldest Place on Earth
On a Saturday morning in January, the temperature in Yakutsk sits at minus fifty-four. A cup of boiling water thrown into that air turns to ice crystals before it lands. And yet the streets are full. Children are playing outside with their parents. A woman is walking to the market for milk, sold not in bottles but in solid frozen blocks, stacked like firewood. Nobody here is stranded. Nobody is waiting to be rescued. Somewhere else in the world, weather decides whether a bus runs a few minutes late. Here, it decides whether the front door opens at all. And somehow, that's the part that takes longest to explain.
