Odisha BJD Cross-Voting Case: High Court Seeks Reply From Speaker| 8 MLAs Under Disqualification Row

Odisha’s political and legal debate over alleged cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha election has now reached the Orissa High Court. BJD chief whip Pramila Mallik has challenged the Odisha Assembly Speaker’s rejection of disqualification petitions against eight BJD MLAs. The party had alleged that the MLAs violated the party directive during the Rajya Sabha election. The Orissa High Court has sought responses from Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy, the Assembly Secretary and the concerned MLAs. The next hearing is scheduled for September 29, 2026. The case raises important questions about the anti-defection law, party whips, cross-voting, Speaker’s powers and judicial review.
