Many caregivers wonder how they will know when a loved one is “ready” for hospice. It is a tender and difficult question, and many families naturally feel they are “not there yet.” But hospice can often help sooner than people realize. Hospice is not about giving up. It is about adding comfort, guidance, and support when a serious illness is no longer improving despite appointments, treatments, or trips to the emergency room. If symptoms are hard to manage at home, or if caregiving is becoming overwhelming, it may be time to ask for an evaluation. Consider calling hospice if your loved one continues to decline despite ongoing care, has pain or symptoms that are difficult to control, makes repeated emergency room visits, or feels exhausted by the cycle of illness and treatment. A hospice assessment is free and does not require a doctor’s order to call. A nurse can meet with your family, discuss your loved one’s needs, and explain whether hospice or another supportive service may be appropriate. If you are wondering whether your loved one is “there yet,” that question itself may be a reason to reach out. Calling earlier gives families more time to understand their options and receive support with comfort and dignity in mind.
