What happens when thousands of desperate immigrants arrive in America searching for a better life, only to discover that the streets of their new homeland are filled with poverty, prejudice, overcrowding, and hardship?
In the second part of our prologue, Nana Mary, the StoryKeeper, takes us back to 19th-century Boston, where waves of Irish immigrants struggled to survive in a rapidly changing city. Many lived in crowded tenements, worked long hours for little pay, and met prejudice at nearly every turn. Churches, charities, and aid societies did what they could, but they were overwhelmed by the desperate needs of women, children, and families who had nowhere else to turn.
Among those families was my great-grandmother, Margaret "Maggie" Sullivan Brogan, an Irish immigrant and mother of two young boys, Billy and Timmy.
As hardship and heartbreaking circumstances threaten to tear her little family apart, Maggie must find the courage to face decisions no mother should ever have to make.
But this is more than a story of poverty and suffering. It is a story of a mother's extraordinary love, the kindness of strangers, the determination to survive, and the courage that would carry one family through generations.
These are not fictional characters in a historical novel. These are the extraordinary true stories of my own family.
Join me beside the fireplace as we begin our journey through generations of courage, tenacity, love, and hope.
I'm Nana Mary, the StoryKeeper, and I'll be saving you a seat by the fireplace.
