The Sound of Music: the real Maria von Trapp is hiding in plain sight, and the famous escape heads straight toward Hitler's mountain home.
Watch the archway as Julie Andrews walks through Salzburg. The older woman crossing the street is the real Maria. Christopher Plummer mocked the film for decades with a rude nickname, and Liesl was really twenty-five.
That opening meadow? The helicopter kept knocking Julie Andrews flat, and the field sits on the German side of the border. The littlest von Trapp sank to the bottom of the lake, and Charmian Carr crashed straight through the gazebo glass.
The critics hated it, yet it knocked Gone with the Wind off the throne. Meanwhile the real family sold their story for nine thousand dollars.
And the bonus: the real escape was quieter, and braver than anything Hollywood filmed.
