Everyone has seen the photograph.
A carved facade in rose-red sandstone, seen through a narrow canyon opening.
Almost nobody knows what's behind it.
Petra was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom — an Arab civilization whose writing system became the Arabic alphabet used by 1.8 billion people today. At its peak, Petra had a self-pressurizing water system that delivered water to every household in a desert city without pumps. It had a theater for 8,500 people. A parliament. A school of philosophy.
And 85 percent of it is still underground.
Using AI reconstruction, we rebuild Petra at its 100 BC peak: the full city beyond the famous facade, the Nabataean hydraulic system that applied the Venturi principle 2,000 years before it was named, the carved necropolis covering every cliff face in the valley, the colonnaded street, the night of candles in the Siq, and the story of what happened to the people when Rome arrived.
Season 2 finale. Then five cities for Season 3.
