Mona (Deborah Stokes), an innocent 13-year-old schoolgirl living in a quiet English village. She crosses paths with Captain Manston (played by the legendary Frank Finlay), a lonely former soldier who is slowly dying from the long-term effects of being gassed in the First World War. Though Captain Manston initially rejects her presence with anger, Mona’s persistent kindness breaks through his rough exterior. Despite the cruel rumours and malicious gossip of the local villagers, an unlikely and tender bond forms between them, and Mona becomes his sole source of comfort in his final months.
