Who Gets to Build Theory? The Philippine Community Schools and the Politics of Knowledge Production
Speaker(s): Ruanni Tupas
Recorded Day 2 – Archipelagic Tongues: SOAS Philippine Studies Conference 2026, 9:00–10:00 (Room KLT)
Session: Keynote Address
Ruanni Tupas is Professor of Language, Politics and Education at UCL Institute of Education. An Aklanon/Filipino scholar, his work examines language in education, language policy, TESOL, multilingualism, and knowledge production, with attention to inequality, coloniality, and the Global South. He has delivered more than a hundred invited talks and workshops internationally, including keynotes and plenary sessions, most recently as a plenary speaker at the 2026 American Association for Applied Linguistics conference. He has published widely across applied linguistics and sociolinguistics and is known, through his work on Unequal Englishes and inequalities of multilingualism, for rethinking English and multilingualism as deeply entangled with power, mobility, and social justice in contemporary global contexts and histories. For around three decades now, he has also worked very closely with educators from different parts of the world, on curriculum development and materials design, especially in educational contexts across Southeast Asia.
