This song began with a beautiful handwritten copy of L’Étoile (The Star), a poem by the French poet and playwright Jacques Normand (1848–1928). I had been playing around with the poem for some time, trying to turn its idea into a song, but I could never quite find the right words or the right tune. I recently returned to it and tried again — and this time the song finally came together. At the heart of Normand’s poem is a wonderfully simple thought: generations come and go and hundreds of years pass, yet the first star of evening remains. People have looked up at that same point of light before us. They had their own hopes and fears, their ordinary lives and stories. Most are now forgotten. And long after we have gone, others will stand beneath the evening sky and look up too. So when the first star appears, perhaps it is worth stopping for a moment and remembering all those who came before us — and all those who will follow. We borrow the evening, We borrow the shore, We stand for a moment Where others stood before. Inspired by “L’Étoile” by Jacques Normand (1848–1928). Forgotten Stories Forgotten lives. Forgotten words.
