We went looking for who he was. Under the card there is a man. Mahad, a priest in ancient Egypt, childhood friend and sworn protector of the pharaoh Atem. Stronger than most who ever sat on a throne, he stood behind it instead. He died fighting for his friend and came back as the magician on the card. Readers knew the card for six years before they learned it had once been a man. In his very first scene he loses. The card that became the face of the game was never about being unbeatable. It was about not leaving. So the song is his voice. Two friends talking. One more thing we found, after the song was written. Kazuki Takahashi, the man who drew the magician, died in 2022 off Okinawa trying to pull strangers out of a rip current. The author of a story about loyalty stronger than death went into the water for people he did not know. And yes, the card is real. It was drawn for a real person, in a real world, where real friends have each other's backs and nobody puts their name on it. HOW WE MADE IT What you are watching is an animatic: the whole song laid out on its timeline, built from painted plates and short motion windows. The clock running bottom-left and the scene number bottom-right were our checking marks while we built it on a phone. We kept them: you get to see the film being assembled from pieces, in time, as it plays. First the song map: 97 downbeats, one bar every 2.49 seconds, and every cut lands on one of them. Then 45 painted plates in the style of a children's book: the throne hall, the open palm, the sand, the card. Then six-second motion windows only where something is actually done: the mage's one step out of the shadow into the light, the courtiers leaving the hall. Then the assembly, written in code, no editing desk. The studio intro at the start is code too, letters and lines drawn frame by frame. TOOLS Music: Suno v6. Plates: GPT-Image via Codex.
