*Can the very people who claim to represent Jesus sometimes become the reason others walk away from Him?*
Welcome to AnchorPoint with Chaplain J!
In this first sermon, **Don't Block the Doorway**, we examine one of the strongest warnings Jesus gave to the religious leaders in Matthew 23:13—and what that warning means for Christians and the Church today.
Throughout my life, I've experienced both sides of Christianity. I've encountered people who genuinely demonstrated the love and compassion of Christ, but I've also experienced church hurt, spiritual manipulation, and the misuse of Scripture. There were seasons when I questioned God, explored other beliefs, and wanted absolutely nothing to do with Christianity.
But somewhere along the way, I had to learn something important:
*The failures of people who claim to represent Jesus do not define the character of Jesus Christ.*
In this message, we explore what happens when Scripture is used to frighten, shame, or manipulate people instead of faithfully pointing them toward Christ. We also examine why the answer to harmful religious practices isn't abandoning biblical truth.
Jesus never compromised truth to show compassion, and He never withheld compassion to speak truth.
*In this sermon, we'll explore:*
Why Jesus confronted the religious leaders in Matthew 23:13.
How Scripture can be misused or taken out of context.
The difference between conviction, shame, and religious pressure.
Why biblical correction should lead toward restoration.
How Jesus demonstrated both grace and truth.
Why Christians must allow Scripture to examine their own hearts before using it to examine others.
What it truly means to speak the truth in love.
*Scriptures Referenced:*
Matthew 23:13 | John 1:14 | Luke 15:1–7 | Ephesians 4:15 | Hebrews 4:12–13
*Content Notice:* This message includes non-graphic references to childhood S.A., violence, and painful experiences within the Church.
Whether you're a longtime Christian, someone who has walked away from the Church, someone wrestling with difficult questions, or someone searching for answers, I hope this message encourages you to look beyond the failures of people and examine the Jesus Christ revealed in Scripture.
*A question worth asking ourselves:*
Are our words, attitudes, actions, and the way we handle God's Word helping others see Jesus more clearly—or are we becoming an obstacle in the doorway?
We are called to proclaim biblical truth faithfully, demonstrate genuine compassion, and trust God with the results.
*The Holy Spirit convicts. The gospel calls. Jesus saves.*
If this message challenges or encourages you, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Respectful questions and conversations grounded in Scripture are always welcome.
