The Beatles – Hold Me Tight | 1963 UK Mono in Stereo – 2026 Remix

On February 11, 1963—one of the most productive days in the history of recorded music—The Beatles recorded thirteen takes of “Hold Me Tight” for their debut album, Please Please Me. None of those original takes is known to survive. After the song was left off the album, the session tapes were discarded. Seven months later, The Beatles returned to “Hold Me Tight” and recorded it again for With The Beatles. This time, it made the grade, appearing as the second track on side two of the album. This presentation features my stereo remix of the UK mono version (sourced from original 1963 vinyl), released to the British public on November 22, 1963. American listeners would not receive the song until January 1964. I had the option of remixing the original stereo version, but it features the same unusual vocal-on-one-side and instruments-on-the-other separation heard throughout much of With The Beatles. Instead, I chose the mono version because of its stronger sonics and punchier low end. Even so, “Hold Me Tight” remained a considerable remixing challenge. Excessive compression and a general lack of transparency affect much of the original album, making it difficult to uncover definition and separation without weakening the energy of the performance. My usual remix arrangement applies very much here: Paul’s lead vocal, the bass and the drums are positioned in the center; the guitars sit off center; and the backing vocals are spread widely to the left and right. Some backing vocals remain in the center with Paul, but I especially wanted to emphasize John and George’s answering harmony shouts. Creative editing was used to strengthen those responses and give them a greater presence within the stereo soundstage. The drums are deeply buried in the original mixes, but I managed to bring them farther forward and provide some separation during some of the tom-tom breaks. And then there are those handclaps—yes, those ever-present handclaps! I tried to lessen the attention they attract by leaving them mixed in the center with the drums. Handclaps are often placed toward the outer edges of a stereo mix, where they can contribute excitement and width without competing so directly with the rhythm section. Most of the photographs seen throughout this video were taken on September 12, 1963—the very day The Beatles recorded this version of “Hold Me Tight” at EMI Studio Two in London. During afternoon and evening sessions that day, they also worked on “Don’t Bother Me,” “Little Child,” and “I Wanna Be Your Man.” This time, “Hold Me Tight” was completed in nine takes. The Beatles video clips used in the presentation were filmed only a few days earlier, on September 1, during an appearance on the television program Big Night Out at an ABC studio in Manchester. Together, these photographs and film clips surround the viewer with images captured remarkably close to the exact place and time in which “Hold Me Tight” was recorded.
