🏛️ A Short History
Niagara-on-the-Lake has a fascinating place in Canadian history.
The settlement was established for United Empire Loyalists in the late 18th century, and in 1792 it became the first capital of Upper Canada. The town was originally known as Newark and later became known as Niagara before eventually taking the name Niagara-on-the-Lake. �

The town played an important role during the War of 1812. In 1813, American forces captured the town, and much of it was destroyed during the conflict and subsequent retreat. It was rebuilt afterward, helping create the historic 19th-century character visitors see today. �

Nearby Fort George was built by the British between 1796 and 1803 to defend the Niagara River, Navy Hall and the town. Today, Fort George is a Parks Canada National Historic Site and an important part of the area's military history. �
