They had crossed an ocean expecting a prison. What the German prisoners sent to Oregon found instead was Camp White — a silent city of barracks in the pines — work on farms and in warehouses, full plates, art classes and camp newspapers, in a green landscape that looked like home. More than 3,500 German prisoners passed through eight Oregon camps; at Camp White alone, 1,662 men spent Christmas 1944 behind American wire, better fed than the families they had left behind. Drawing on Fahey's "Reeducating German Prisoners" in the Oregon Historical Quarterly, the Willi Gross memoir and Camp Adair Sentry at Oregon State University, the Oregon Historical Society's Camp White record, the National Park Service nomination for the Camp White Station Hospital and the Provost Marshal General's figures — 371,683 Germans in U.S. custody by May 1945 — this film tells the whole arc: the crossing, the trains west, the work, the full plate, and the secret mission Oregon's prisoners never saw coming.
