ファイナルファンタジーVI 第五章 / Chapter 5 of Final Fantasy VI 言葉では清算できない借りがある。ならば、拳で。 長く会っていない弟に会うため、エドガーは山の道場を訪ねる。だがそこで待っていたのは、ひとつの惨劇の跡だった。師は死んでいた——実の息子、ヴァルガスの手によって。理由は、どこまでも人間くさく、そして小さい。奥義を継いだのが、実の息子である自分ではなく、父が拾ってきた子どもだったから。マッシュ。 そこから始まるのは、悲しみから削り出されたような殴り合いだ。ヴァルガスは自ら編み出した必殺技・連風燕略拳を放ち、奥義『終死拳』で葬ると告げる。必殺技のひとつも使えないマッシュの耳に、師の声が最後にもう一度よみがえる——感情に流されてはならん。心を、明鏡止水のごとく静めよ。ヴァルガスはそれを運命と呼ぶ。師が死んだことも、マッシュが自分に勝てないことも、すべて定められた運命なのだと。そしてマッシュは、持てるすべてで応える。 その果てに待っているのは、再会と、熊にまつわるひどい誤解と、ひとつの決断。リターナーの本部が待っている。反撃の時は来た——この拳が、世界の平和の役に立つのなら。 Some debts can't be settled with words. Only with fists. Edgar climbs to a mountain dojo to find the younger brother he hasn't seen in years — and walks straight into the aftermath of a murder. The master of the school is dead, killed by his own son, Vargas. His reason is as small and as human as reasons get: the secret arts were passed not to him, his own flesh and blood, but to the stray boy his father took in. Sabin. What follows is a brawl carved out of grief. Vargas unleashes the technique he devised himself, the Blizzard Fist, and promises to finish it with the Doom Fist. Sabin — who can't manage a single finishing move — hears his master's voice one last time: do not be swept away by emotion, still your heart, clear as a polished mirror, calm as unmoving water. Vargas calls it fate: that his master had to die, and that Sabin could never beat him — a fate already sealed. Then Sabin answers, with everything he has. By the end there's a reunion, a very bad guess about a bear, and a decision.
