A walk around historic Warwick Castle on a rather busy day in summer 2026. https://www.warwick-castle.com/ Warwick Castle is a historic medieval fortress overlooking the River Avon in Warwickshire, England, originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068.Origins and History Early roots: The site began as an Anglo-Saxon fortified town (burh) founded by Æthelflæd (daughter of Alfred the Great) in 914 AD. Norman construction: William the Conqueror built a wooden motte-and-bailey castle here to assert dominance in the Midlands. Stone rebuilding: The timber fort was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. Notable owners: Over the centuries, it was held by powerful noble families including the Beauchamps and Richard Neville (the famous "Kingmaker" during the Wars of the Roses). Country house transition: In 1604, James I granted the property to Sir Fulke Greville, who converted the stronghold into a stately country house. The Greville family owned it until 1978. Modern Attraction Today: It operates as a popular tourist destination set within 64 acres of grounds and gardens (featuring landscaping by Capability Brown). Features: Visitors can explore medieval ramparts, staterooms, live shows, birds of prey displays, and the spooky Castle Dungeon walk-through. Accommodations: The site includes the Knight's Village for themed lodge stays and seasonal glamping. #warwickcastle #history #richardneville #castle #historicsite #trebuchet #zog #dragon
