ALONISSOS OLD TOWN 🇬🇷 | The Most Beautiful Village in the Aegean

In Alonissos Old Town, the breathtaking panoramic views of the Aegean are only matched by the romantic charm of its beautifully restored cobblestone alleys. Perched high on a hilltop like a medieval eagle's nest, this historic capital is a living masterpiece of Mediterranean resilience and authentic island architecture. Our walk begins at the entrance of the labyrinthine streets of Chora. We wander past incredibly picturesque stone houses draped in vibrant fuchsia bougainvillea, many of which were painstakingly restored by locals and expats following the devastating 1965 earthquake that briefly emptied the town. As we navigate the narrow, car-free pathways—originally designed with confusing dead-ends to baffle invading pirates, a feature that still does a remarkably good job of baffling modern tourists without a map—we pass inviting traditional cafes and artisan boutiques. The journey winds its way up to the highest point of the village near the remnants of the medieval Kastro, rewarding us with a sweeping, uninterrupted 360-degree view of the deep blue sea and neighboring Sporades islands.
