How fair are India's government recruitment examinations? A major investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has exposed an alleged organised network of impersonators operating in banking recruitment examinations. Four people have been arrested from Delhi, Haryana and Kolkata, including a CGST inspector, for allegedly appearing in examinations and interviews on behalf of other candidates. The investigation has raised serious questions about the credibility of recruitment examinations and the functioning of India's examination system. According to the IBPS complaint, data analysis, photograph comparisons and biometric verification identified 257 suspicious candidates in recruitment examinations conducted between 2020 and 2024. Among them, 180 candidates are reportedly still working in government and regional rural banks. The investigation also points towards an organised solver gang syndicate allegedly involved in helping undeserving candidates secure government jobs through fraudulent means. In this episode of Fact and Figures, Hemant breaks down how these alleged solver networks operate, how impersonation takes place during written examinations and interviews, and how examination centres and other individuals are allegedly involved in recruitment fraud. The episode also examines the controversial Uttar Pradesh Police Sub-Inspector (UPSI) Recruitment 2020-21, which involved 9,534 vacancies. Investigations by the UP Special Task Force (STF) raised concerns about remote access, suspicious examination patterns, candidate response logs (CRL) and alleged manipulation at examination centres. The legal battle surrounding candidates accused of using solvers, and the Allahabad High Court's observations about the need for concrete evidence rather than mere suspicion, are also discussed. From banking examinations and UPSSSC PET to SSC recruitment and UP Police examinations, repeated allegations of paper leaks, impersonation and organised cheating have raised serious concerns about the future of deserving candidates. If recruitment examinations can be manipulated and fraudulent candidates can enter government institutions, what happens to the thousands of hardworking students preparing honestly for these jobs? Who will take responsibility for the opportunities lost by deserving candidates? Watch the full episode to understand the alleged recruitment fraud network, the UPSI controversy and the bigger questions surrounding transparency and accountability in India's government job examinations.
