Something extraordinary is hidden in the biblical history of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. In this video, I trace the story of how the site of the Jewish Temple was revealed in the days of King David, beginning with Shiloh and the Ark of the Covenant, continuing through David’s census, the devastating plague, the angel standing over Jerusalem, and the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. We examine why David refused to accept the land for free, why the Bible records an actual purchase price, and why both 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles 21 preserve this remarkable story. We also explore the teaching of Nachmanides that Israel had been commanded to seek the permanent place of God’s dwelling, and that the location of the Temple was ultimately revealed through the plague itself. The story then goes even deeper. We look at the Dead Sea Scroll manuscript 4Q51, which preserves part of this ancient Samuel account from before Christianity and Islam, and we follow the Temple Mount tradition back through Mount Moriah, Abraham and Isaac, Noah, Cain and Abel, Adam, the Foundation Stone, and ultimately the opening chapters of Genesis. This is not simply a story about who controlled Jerusalem. It is the story of how the Temple Mount became the spiritual center of Jewish history and why King David insisted on purchasing the site before the Temple could be built.
