Before the war began, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto told Japan's prime minister he could "run wild" for six months. After that, he promised nothing. He opposed the war, received death threats for it, and then planned how it would begin.
In this breakdown, Minds of Warfare follows his six-month clock through three moves:
I. The Fist of Six Carriers: the strike on Pearl Harbor (7 December 1941)
II. The Long Arm: land-based navy bombers sink Prince of Wales and Repulse off Malaya (10 December 1941)
III. The Raid on the Ocean Nobody Watched: Operation C against Ceylon and the British Eastern Fleet (April 1942)
And then the day the clock ran out: Midway, three days short of six months after Pearl Harbor.
Should a commander who believes the war is lost refuse to plan it? Tell us in the comments, and tell us which commander Minds of Warfare should break down next.
Minds of Warfare: Behind every legendary victory lies a brilliant mind.
