Why Nobody Can Fix the Khumbu Icefall

The Khumbu Icefall is only about two kilometers long, yet at least 47 people have died inside it since 1953—and the route itself can move nearly a meter a day. The problem is not simply bad engineering: ladders, ropes, and crossings are fixed to ice that shifts, fractures, collapses, and must be rebuilt every season. This video follows the Icefall from Crampon Point to the upper crevasse fields, including the 2014 disaster, the 2015 reroute, helicopter and drone attempts, and the brutal difference between a client crossing six to eight times and a Sherpa worker crossing as many as 40.
