Bioindustry4.0 – 3. Stored for resurrection

Culture collections such as the DSMZ and the Westerdijk Institute preserve tens of thousands of microorganisms for long-term scientific use. Freeze-drying and cryopreservation in liquid nitrogen at −190 °C allow stable storage with later revival. Automated systems manage freeze-dried samples, while cryoprotectants protect cells during deep freezing. These techniques ensure that living cultures remain available for research. The efforts support BioIndustry 4.0 in strengthening European microbial resource infrastructures.
