Today, we’re exploring the charming streets of Turku to experience Finland's oldest city's everyday atmosphere and culture. Turku was founded during the 13th century and became Finland's earliest urban center, serving as an important hub for trade, education, administration, and international connections across the Baltic Sea for several centuries afterward. Until 1812, Turku was Finland's capital under Swedish rule, but the administrative center moved to Helsinki after the country became part of the Russian Empire in 1809, changing its national political role permanently. In 1827, the Great Fire of Turku destroyed much of the city, leading to extensive rebuilding and a redesigned urban layout that shaped its modern development for generations afterward with improved planning and infrastructure. During the late 19th and 20th centuries, Turku expanded as an industrial, maritime, and educational city, supported by shipbuilding, manufacturing, universities, and growing international business while attracting people from across Finland. From the 1990s onward, Turku strengthened its economy through technology, life sciences, research, and innovation while maintaining its role as an important port connecting Finland with Sweden and broader European markets.
