“One Hand on the Trigger” by Topher Ryan — an original country song about addiction, abandonment, mental health, faith, survival, and finding a reason to keep going.
This is the most honest and vulnerable song I’ve ever written, and sharing the full music video makes me nervous. But I also know I’m not the only person who has ever felt this way.
My whole life, I’ve struggled with abandonment, addiction, pain, and loss. I spent years running from things I didn’t know how to face.
The last loss I went through almost killed me.
Everything I had been trying to outrun finally caught up with me, and I couldn’t keep pretending I was okay.
I’ve struggled with suicidal thoughts. I’ve questioned whether I mattered. I’ve wondered whether I would ever be enough.
Some of that began with being abandoned as a baby. I was eventually adopted by an incredible woman, but later, the man who adopted me left too.
That kind of hurt follows you.
For years, I carried it into relationships, addiction, mistakes, heartbreak, and the way I saw myself.
I’m still working through it. I don’t have everything figured out.
But I’m finally learning something:
Losing people doesn’t mean I’m unworthy of love.
Struggling with addiction doesn’t erase my worth.
Needing help doesn’t make me weak.
It turns out…
I am enough.
And if you’re watching this while fighting your own battle:
You are too.
“One Hand on the Trigger” gave me a way to put words and pictures to things I’ve carried for a long time. That’s the kind of music I want to make—songs that tell real stories about addiction, heartbreak, recovery, faith, loss, redemption, and the things people are sometimes afraid to say out loud.
If this song connects with you, please watch the video through to the end, leave a comment, and share it with somebody who might need to hear it today.
You never know what someone is fighting behind closed doors.
And if you recognize yourself in this story, please tell somebody you trust what you’re going through. You deserve support, even when asking for it feels impossible.
I’m grateful I’m still here.
And I’m grateful you’re here listening.
