How did a young ascetic from a village near Ayodhya come to be worshipped as God, and how did his movement grow, in just over 200 years, into one of the richest Hindu organisations in the world?
In this Hindi history documentary we trace the origin of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya: Ghanshyam Pande's journey as Nilkanth Varni, his succession from Ramanand Swami, his 1825 meeting with Bishop Reginald Heber, the Shikshapatri, and the split into the Ahmedabad, Vadtal and later BAPS branches. We compare its ideas and stories with older Indian traditions, including Ramanuja's Vishishtadvaita, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Vallabhacharya's Pushtimarg and the childhood stories of Krishna, and follow its spread with the Gujarati diaspora through East Africa, Britain and North America.
We also look at documented controversies: the 2023 Salangpur Hanuman mural row, abuse allegations and fraud cases against individual monks of different factions in Gujarat, and the 2021 forced-labour lawsuit over the BAPS temple in New Jersey. All cases are presented as reported in the news. Allegations are not convictions, and these cases involve individuals, not the millions of devotees of the tradition.
