Rachel Podger offers in this concert a selection of baroque fantasias and suites for solo violin around the double meaning of fantasy: as a genre and as an interpretative philosophy. Here she adds the challenge of translating polyphonic music into an essentially monophonic instrument. The transfer to the solo violin (perhaps the original instrument thought by Bach) of the very famous Toccata BWV 565 for organ illustrates an extreme case of how two instruments of almost antagonistic physiognomy and technique can face the same composition.
