Matthew opens the New Testament by reaching back seven hundred years: a son will be born of a virgin, and His name will be Immanuel - 'God with us.' It is a sign first given to a terrified king in Jerusalem, and Matthew says it was written to be kept. Here is how you follow that promise the whole way - walk the square.
In this Walk the Square, Professor Westminster takes a single Old Testament sign - the Immanuel promise of Isaiah 7 - and walks all four corners of Edmund Clowney's square: start with the text in its own world, Jerusalem under siege in the days of King Ahaz (bottom-left), up the left to the truth it taught Israel, that God pledges His own saving presence to the house of David - the kingdom will not fall, because God is with His people (top-left), across the top to its fulfillment in Christ, God Himself with us, conceived of a virgin (top-right), and down the right to what it means for you (bottom-right). This connection is not typology but promise and fulfillment - a prophetic sign filled to the full - so there is no diagonal to draw. And the name is Matthew's banner over his whole Gospel: it opens with Immanuel, 'God with us' (1:23), and closes with the risen Christ's 'I am with you always, even to the end of the age' (28:20).

THE THREAD
Here the thread is a name carried whole across the testaments. The Hebrew name of the sign-child, 'immanu el, means 'God with us'; it comes across into Greek unchanged - Emmanouel - and Matthew does not leave us to guess, he translates it on the spot: 'God with us.' A second strand runs underneath: the Greek Old Testament renders the sign-child's mother parthenos, 'virgin,' where the Hebrew says 'almah, a young woman of marriageable age - and Matthew presses that specifying word to its fullest, fulfilled in Mary's virginal conception. One name, one sign - spoken to Ahaz, and kept in Christ.
The method here is Edmund Clowney's, refined by Vern Poythress.
