SIR protests: ‘Youth unrest will intensify,’ says activist Rajalaxmi Ankalagi

The crackdown on anti-SIR protesters in Delhi has raised fresh questions about the right to peaceful assembly, voter rights and the role of the judiciary. In this interview with The Federal, Karnataka-based independent advocate and activist Rajalaxmi Ankalagi argues that the protests reflect wider youth discontent over unemployment, education and governance. Ankalagi says the demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and the call to scrap the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls are closely linked. She argues that the police crackdown could intensify the movement, questions the proportionality of the response, and raises concerns over the Supreme Court’s treatment of detained protesters.
