"Car wash" is four different businesses wearing the same two words, and only one of them starts small. We ran the unit economics on all four. Every figure here is human-verified against primary sources, and all of them are linked below. A distressed self-serve site sells for a hundred and forty thousand dollars. A new franchised express tunnel runs five to nine point three million. And a mobile detailing van starts on a Saturday for a few thousand. Those are not three sizes of one business, they are three different industries that happen to share a search term, and they land in three different categories on this channel's taxonomy. So we built the model on the only one with a genuine small version, using the detailing industry's own promotional price and time claims, and compared the result to what the Bureau of Labor Statistics says a car wash pays somebody to do that same work on an hourly schedule. Along the way: the franchise document that federal law forces to disclose how much of your money goes straight back to the seller, the California bond that drops ninety percent if your workers have a union contract, the water law that exempts the format using the most water per car, and the private equity chain that nearly doubled its revenue on borrowed money and then filed Chapter 11 with about a million dollars left.
