This is my practice session for my postdoc appreciation week workshop on teaching in the German academic landscape.
It is on purpose kept basic to give a frame and start a conversation on teaching.
The workshop focus on what postdocs, junior professors, and PI-track researchers can expect regarding teaching responsibilities at German universities:
-Typical teaching formats in German higher education, including lectures, seminars, and practical courses.
-Why excellence as a scientist does not automatically mean excellence in teaching - the stress that comes with this realization, and how to start developing as an educator and grow over time (without drowning) - specifically I give 3 example situations and the skills are not just presented but isolated through brainstorming with the audience.
-A guided, interactive Q&A session to address participants' questions and experiences.
I am a scientist and educator with strong didactics background. As such, I am passionate about supporting early-career researchers in navigating both research and teaching roles based on principles that work and improve the learnimg outcome for the students.
I felt that this topic is underrepresented in academic career development (also because quality of teaching is emotionally relevant but less relevant for landing a job) hence I wanted to fill this gap during these workshop sessions.
Feel free to leave comments about the three examples from real-life teaching educators in the chat to start a conversation.
