Lydia Marsh comes to the poor Suffolk village of Lavenham with one bag, a borrowed needle box and four shillings. She finds a leaking shed on the Duke's land, hangs up a hand-painted sign, and starts sweeping the mud. When August Ashby, the Duke of Kestrel, rides past in the rain and stops to ask why, Lydia boldly asks him for one season's rent on credit. Amused, he says yes. Soon hungry village women are leaving the cruel cloth merchant Josiah Crabb to sew for Lydia at fair wages, and the busy Duke starts finding reasons to ride past her door. But Crabb owns half the village, and he does not share. A stone crashes through her window. A huge order is ruined overnight. And someone close to the Duke is holding papers that could brand Lydia a thief in front of the whole county. Can one penniless seamstress stand against the richest man in Lavenham? This is a full-length Regency romance narration of a brave seamstress, a duke who learns to look, and a village that finds its courage.
