🎻 The Bard's Notes
An uplifting fantasy folk pop singalong — four-on-the-floor stomp, claps, and a crowd chant from the first bar. No intro, straight in.
Fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki, bodhrán and a full kit. She is alone in this one, which is why every line comes back at her: the cave is the second voice. She shouts, the ice answers, and the answer gets closer and louder as she climbs — and by the last chorus it is not the cave answering any more.
For long climbs, bad days, and anybody on their own right now.
🔥 By the Fire
I came to at the bottom of a room the size of night — blue on blue on blue, and not one footprint that was mine. So I did the only thing a singer ever does: I opened my mouth to hear how big the quiet was.
And it came back — my own voice, wearing frost, half a breath behind, like it knew I was lost. Somebody would call that lonely. I call it a choice. A wall that hands your voice back is standing on the side of the voice.
The answer used to take its time — I could count it on the climb. Then it came back quicker, landing on top of mine, and I knew the ceiling was dropping toward my hand.
I threw one more up the shaft and braced for my own name. What came back did not sound the same. It had boots in it, and benches, and a fiddle, and a chair. It was not the mountain — it was people, and they were there.
They say alone is how you go fast, and together is how you go long. I went alone, I went fast, and I came up into together.
🎶 Lyrics
[Intro Chant]
UP! UP! UP! — ALL THE WAY UP!
UP! UP! — ALL THE WAY UP!
[Chorus]
ALL THE WAY UP! — I am shouting at the STONE!
ALL THE WAY UP! — NOBODY here, and I am NOT aLONE!
Boot on the ledge and my palm on the frozen DOOR —
I throw one voice into the dark and it hands me back MORE!
ALL THE WAY UP! (WAY UP!)
[Verse 1]
I came to at the bottom of a room the size of NIGHT,
blue on blue on blue and every wall was throwing LIGHT —
so — throat full of frost — I did what every singer DOES,
I opened up my mouth to hear how big the quiet WAS (was, was)
[Chorus repeats]
[Verse 2]
And it came back to me — my own voice, wearing FROST,
half a breath behind me like it knew that I was LOST —
now somebody would call that lonely, but I call it a CHOICE,
because a wall that hands it back is standing with the VOICE
(WITH THE VOICE!)
[Chorus repeats]
[Verse 3]
So I sang to find the corners and the corners sang me BACK,
I could hear the ceiling lifting so I followed up the CRACK —
every shout I ever swallowed, every one I kept inSIDE,
I am throwing all of them at once and letting them deCIDE
[Verse 4]
The answer used to take its time — I could count it on the CLIMB
now it comes back quicker and it lands on top of MINE
That is how I know the ceiling has been dropping to my HAND
the room is getting smaller and the small is where I STAND
Every step I take it answers half a beat too SOON (TOO SOON!)
so I am not walking any more — I am running at the MOON
[Verse 5]
I threw one more up the shaft and I braced for my own NAME
and the thing that came back down to me did not sound the SAME
It had boots in it, and benches, and a fiddle, and a CHAIR (A CHAIR!)
and it was not the mountain — it was people, and they were THERE
So I never saved a single breath, I spent them on the WAY
and here is the only thing I need you to hear me SAY — (HEAR ME SAY!)
[Intro Chant repeats]
[Final Chorus]
ALL THE WAY UP! — I am shouting at the DOOR!
ALL THE WAY UP! — and it is not the dark anyMORE!
Boot on the step and my palm on the frozen PANE —
I threw one voice into the dark and a whole room says my NAME!
ALL THE WAY UP!
[Outro]
There is nothing down there haunted and there's nothing down there WRONG,
(NOTHING WRONG!)
they say alone is how you go fast and together is how you go LONG —
(HOW YOU GO LONG!)
and it gave me back my own voice till I found the ones I KNEW,
(THE ONES I KNEW!)
so if you are down there shouting, then I promise it is TRUE —
(IT IS TRUE!)
Something always answers (SOMETHING ALWAYS ANSWERS!)
🔥 The Fire That Never Goes Out
Ronin Ash is a wandering fire-keeper who rose from her own ashes and keeps a light on the road for whoever comes next. This is the first song she has sung with nobody in the room — and she still could not manage to sing it alone.
🔥 Best Enjoyed With
• Long climbs, late shifts, and the walk home when nobody is awake
• D&D / TTRPG tables lost on the bottom level of a dungeon
• Anyone who is the only one working on a thing right now
• Rooms still waiting for somebody who has not arrived
🗨️ A question for the road
What did you shout into the dark, and what came back?
